Glass spends most of its working life bent. Inside the sheath run two cores of single mode 9/125 fibre, wrapped in the tactical outdoor grade FieldCast keeps for its Heavy Duty line: a skin that survives being walked on, dragged across tarmac and put away wet. Both ends are terminated with an identical male Rosenberger OSI cable connector, so either one can go to the camera position. A threaded cap screws down over the optical contact once the line is stowed, and cap, plug and receptacle are all sealed to IP67 under EN 60529. Two yellow rings around each shell give the combination on sight: single mode, two cores.

A two-core drum covers more ground than the number suggests. The optical side of every FieldCast Mux/Demux chassis is LC singlemode, and a single core through such a box carries four SDI channels together with an Ethernet path, which leaves the second core for the return leg. Where the length falls short, a half-metre coupler cable butts two drums together for 400 m and three for 600 m. A D-size chassis connector lands the cable in a 19-inch panel or a flight case with an LC Duplex fanout behind it, and the FiberBrik adapters take it onto Blackmagic Studio and Camera Converters.

What single mode buys a rental stock is the end of the distance question. Nine-micron glass behaves the same over forty metres and over four kilometres, so one inventory line serves a pit lane at a race circuit, the finish straight of a road race, a trade fair whose gallery sits in a service corridor two halls away, and a harbour pontoon at a sailing event. No one surveys a venue to work out which grade of fibre to load.
