Cutting between camera angles during a live broadcast, layering a graphic over a programme feed, or routing SDI signals across a multi-room facility — each of these tasks hinges on the video mixer at the centre of the signal chain. Whether it is called a production switcher or a vision mixer, this device determines how sources are combined, transitioned and delivered in real time. A decade ago, a four-input HD unit filled half a rack. Today, equipment that fits in a shoulder bag processes 4K, supports NDI and SRT, and streams directly to YouTube, Facebook or Twitch.
Corporate webinars, classroom captures and podcast studios typically use two to four HDMI cameras plus a laptop for slides. A tabletop HDMI video mixer with cut/mix buttons and USB-C capture covers these needs without occupying rack space. The Roland V-1HD delivers four HDMI 1080p inputs, a twelve-channel audio mixer and physical faders in a chassis under 1 kg. The AVMATRIX Shark H4 adds RTMP and SRT streaming over RJ-45, SD-card recording at up to 32 Mbit/s and a six-channel audio section with two mic inputs — at a much lower price point. Operators needing SDI can move to the Shark S4, which swaps two HDMI ports for two 3G-SDI inputs. The RGBlink Mini-ISO brings ISO recording of each input for post-production flexibility, accepts four HDMI sources up to 4K and streams via RTMP(S) to four platforms simultaneously through a 3.5-inch touchscreen interface.
The YoloLiv YoloBox replaces the traditional button-covered switcher with a touchscreen that doubles as a live-streaming encoder, recorder and programme monitor. The original model has a 7-inch display, two HDMI inputs, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and optional 4G LTE; operators switch sources, overlay lower thirds or display audience comments by tapping the screen. The YoloBox Ultra steps up to an 8-inch 650 cd/m² panel, four HDMI inputs, NDI HX and SRT ingest, and H.264/H.265 (HEVC) encoding from 480p to 4K. A 75.48 Wh battery lasts roughly six hours, and network bonding across LTE, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and two USB modems keeps the uplink stable on unreliable connections. The YoloBox Extreme extends I/O further and adds vertical-mode streaming for TikTok and Instagram.
Datavideo has built its reputation on suitcase-style production studios. The HS-1300 fits a six-input HD switcher (four SDI, two HDMI), a 17.3-inch multiview LCD, XLR audio and an H.264 encoder for streaming and recording into a single carry-on chassis, complete with two upstream keyers, two downstream keyers and PiP. The AVMATRIX Shark H4 Plus and S4 Plus take a lighter route: a folding 10.1-inch IPS panel on the lid turns a four-channel mixer into a self-contained station with RTMP/SRT streaming and SD-card recording. For larger setups, the AVMATRIX PVS0613U pairs six inputs with a 13.3-inch full-HD screen. Datavideo's SHOWCAST 100 targets podcasters and talk-show hosts with a 4K HDMI four-input mixer, 14-inch touchscreen, XLR audio and one-touch streaming — no dedicated technical director required.
Hardware-encoder-based live-streaming video mixers send the programme feed to YouTube Live, Facebook Live or Twitch without a separate encoding PC. The AVMATRIX Shark S6 combines six inputs (four SDI, two HDMI), a 5-inch screen, RTMP/SRT streaming, USB-C capture and SD-card recording in a half-rack form factor. The Epiphan Pearl Mini takes a different path — web-browser control, two HDMI and one SDI input, RTMP/SRT streaming with AES-256 encryption and NDI HX ingest — suited to lecture halls and boardrooms where no operator is present. The Epiphan Pearl-2 handles six inputs including 4K SDI and NDI full-bandwidth, encodes at 4K30 on an Intel i7 processor and ships in a 2 RU rackmount variant for permanent installations. Roland approaches streaming from the traditional-switcher side: the VR-6HD offers six HDMI inputs, an 18-channel audio mixer and a USB-C output that feeds OBS or vMix, while the SR-20HD packs similar capabilities into a more compact body for solo operators.
Large-scale events — concerts, sports broadcasts, news studios — call for eight or more SDI inputs, multi-layer keying and tally connectivity. The Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E Constellation 4K packs ten standards-converted 12G-SDI inputs, six auxiliary outputs, four keyers and a 16-window multiview into 1 RU. The 2 M/E model doubles buses and inputs to twenty; the 4 M/E handles forty inputs with four DVEs and sixteen chroma keyers. Roland's V-60HD bridges corporate AV and broadcast with four SDI and two HDMI inputs, an 18-channel mixer with 48 V phantom-powered XLR/TRS combos and a built-in de-interlacer. The V-160HD scales to sixteen inputs, and the V-600UHD switches native 4K UHD at 2160p60. Datavideo's SE-1200MU — six inputs, frame synchronisers on every port, software-only control from PC, Mac or tablet — fits permanently in houses of worship and lecture theatres. The Lumantek ez-Pro VS10 occupies the mid-range: ten inputs (eight SDI, two HDMI), 1080p60 4:2:2 10-bit processing, a 5-inch touchscreen, genlock input and built-in scalers on every port.
When dozens of sources must reach dozens of destinations, a video matrix switcher routes any input to any output without re-encoding — zero added latency, no generation loss. The AJA KUMO 1616 delivers a 16×16 3G-SDI crosspoint in 1 RU, supports dual-/quad-link 4K routing, stores twenty presets and is controlled via its embedded web server or a KUMO CP panel. The 12G variant handles single-link 4K60; the KUMO 3232 and 6464 scale to 32×32 and 64×64 with redundant power and broadcast-grade re-clocking. Blackmagic Design Videohub routers range from 10×10 to 120×120 in 12G-SDI. The AVMATRIX MSS0811 offers an affordable 8×8 3G-SDI matrix with automatic SD/HD/3G detection, redundant 12 V power and RS-232/LAN control. The Osprey Video MSS-8 matches the 8×8 3G-SDI format with 8/10/12-bit colour depth (RGB 4:4:4, YUV 4:2:2/4:4:4), dual power inputs and full-size BNC connectors — a dependable choice for edit suites and OB trucks.
