At 4.8 mm across, the sheath on this drum occupies a little over two fifths of the cross-section of a 7.5 mm tactical cable, and that number explains most of what the FieldCast 4Core MM Ultra Light 200m is for. Two hundred metres wind onto a Schill GT310 drum rather than the wider barrel the outdoor grade needs at the same length, which shows up as van space, shelf space and one fewer pair of hands on the stairs. The glass inside is unchanged: four cores of protected fibre, multimode 50/125 OM3.

What the thinner jacket leaves alone is the interface. Both ends terminate in the same male FieldCast 4Core MM connector, so the drum is symmetrical and nobody reads a label before pulling a run. A screw cap closes over the optical faces, and cap, plug and receptacle are sealed to IP67 in accordance with EN 60529 — protection that earns its keep on a stage floor, where a dropped end meets sawdust, haze residue and scenic paint rather than rain. Four blue rings mark it as 4Core multimode; yellow would mean single mode.

Four fibres on one line also buy a reserve. A two-core run commits every strand to the task in hand; this one carries a duplex link and keeps the second pair cold, so a damaged core becomes a patch change instead of a re-cable mid-rehearsal. Put both pairs to work and the line carries picture and return on one while camera control, intercom or a gigabit data path sits on the other. That suits a drama stage feeding a video village next door, an auditorium relay threaded through conduit under a seating rake, and jib moves where cable mass is what holds the operator back.

Accessories come from the 4Core multimode range. The c9260 coupler cable joins two drums end to end, with the usable total set by the transceivers and the signal rate rather than by the cable. The c9160 adapter cable breaks the four cores out to two LC Duplex pairs across two metres, and the c9060 chassis connector brings the line onto a 19-inch panel or a flight case wall. Indoor sheathing costs less than tactical, and on a cable that lives inside a building that saving carries no operational penalty: the glass, the connector and the accessories are the ones the outdoor drums already use.
