Cable count usually decides how long a multi-camera build takes. The FieldCast Mux + Demux Two 3G reduces that arithmetic to a single strand: a matched multiplexer and demultiplexer pair carrying eight independent 3G-SDI channels across one single-mode fibre core. The mux belongs at the camera end, the demux in the control room or OB truck, and the span between them reaches 40 km — far enough to link a stadium gantry to the compound, or a remote venue to a fixed gallery, with no repeater in between.

Signal handling is deliberately uneventful. Thin-film CWDM multiplexing gives each channel its own wavelength, so eight SDI feeds share the glass without sharing bandwidth. No compression stage, no frame processing: what enters a BNC on the mux leaves the demux bit for bit identical. Every SD and HD standard up to 1080p60 is accepted, at rates to 2.97 Gb/s, with compliance to SMPTE 259M, 344M, 292M and 424M — predictable alongside mixed-vintage cameras, routers and switchers.

Monitoring is covered at both ends. Each of the eight SDI inputs carries a reclocked loop-through, so a local feed reaches an on-set monitor or camera-control position while the same signal runs the fibre. On the demux, every SDI channel offers dual outputs — one to the switcher, one to multiviewer or recorder — across sixteen 75-ohm BNC connectors per unit. Both boxes occupy one rack unit in an aluminium enclosure, draw under 40 W, run on 110–240 VAC through PowerCon locking connectors, and report power, channel activity and signal presence on warm-white indicators readable from across a dim gallery.

Channel count is not fixed. A second LC port marked UPG cascades the pair with another four- or eight-channel FieldCast set, taking the system to sixteen SDI channels on the same fibre core; cascaded pairs separate again when two smaller rigs are needed. On a two-core cable the spare core stays free for a redundant path. Standard units run unidirectionally, eight in to eight out, while factory-built splits such as 4i/4o or 2i/6o suit return feeds and teleprompter duties. For live sport, theatre relay, corporate stage events and studio-to-studio links, one fibre pull becomes lasting infrastructure.

Transport over long distance
The mux/demux pair can transport video over distances of up to 40 km/24 mi for 3G SDI. The mux is typically placed at the camera side, and the demux at the control room side.

8 independent video channels with loop-through and dual output
The set supports 8 independent SDI video channels. The SDI inputs have a reclocked loop-through. The SDI outputs are dual. Hence, monitoring on both sides (input and output) is possible. The SDI input is typically connected to the camera’s SDI output. The SDI output is generally connected to the SDI input of a monitor or switcher.

Transport over one fiber optic core
All information for up to 8 SDI video channels, back and forth, runs over a single fiber optic core. This means a simplex fiber-optic cable is sufficient to bridge the distance between mux and demux, saving on fiber-optic cable costs. Alternatively, if you have a fiber optic cable with 2 cores, you have 1 core (or channel) left for other fiber optic transport. You might, for example, use the free fiber optic core to connect to a second, similar Mux/Demux pair to add redundancy to your setup.

No compression
There is no signal processing involved, so there is no compression; full data integrity is guaranteed.

Unidirectional video by default
The standard model is unidirectional, meaning that 8 SDI signals go from mux to demux; it’s denoted as 8i/o, where ‘i’ stands for input and ‘o’ stands for output.

Upgrade (UPG) port to add more channels
Start with the channels you need today and scale up as demand grows. The UPG Port lets you add more channels without replacing your existing hardware. Simply connect the UPG port of your existing Mux/Demux pair to the COM port of a secondary 4-channel or 8-channel Mux/Demux pair, supporting up to 16 SDI video channels plus full-duplex 1Gb Ethernet. When connected, the cascaded systems will still carry all information over a single fiber-optic core. Cascaded systems can be easily split into two independent Mux/Demux systems and then recascaded as needed, making them ideal for environments requiring staged or modular network builds.
