At a 122° angle of view, light stands, flags and crew positions become part of the shot plan. The Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Canon RF is a rectilinear ultra-wide prime covering full-frame and VistaVision sensors. Zero-D correction keeps barrel distortion restrained at 12 mm, helping studio walls, architectural lines and display structures retain a natural reading. The native RF mount also removes the need for an extra adapter on compact cinema and hybrid bodies—useful inside vehicles, narrow corridors and small sets.

The optical formula places 16 elements in 10 groups behind a cinema aperture range of T2.9 to T22. At T2.9, available-light establishing shots remain viable and a near subject separates more clearly than viewers may expect from 12 mm; stopping down adds depth for interiors, virtual-production stages and location plates. A seven-blade diaphragm and stepless iris permit exposure changes during a take. Zero-D does not cancel the perspective stretch inherent to ultra-wide optics, so faces are best kept away from the extreme frame edges—a distinction an experienced camera team will value.

Close focus reaches 18 cm from the sensor plane, with 0.2× maximum magnification. That combination lets a prop, control panel or product lead the composition while its environment remains legible behind it. The 270° focus rotation and metric distance scale give a focus puller enough travel for repeatable marks, including demanding near-to-far moves. Both focus and iris rings carry 0.8 MOD cine gears, ready for a follow-focus motor, hand unit or conventional mechanical drive.

The metal barrel, manual focus and manual iris keep settings under direct crew control between takes. On a RED KOMODO, Canon EOS C70 or another RF camera, the lens supports gimbal passes, close-quarter handheld work, architectural coverage and dramatic master shots without changing its character through an adapter. A front adapter for standard matte boxes, calibration shims and a fitted hard case aid rig integration, flange checks and protected transport. For a rental inventory or production company, one RF prime covering large-format and smaller sensors can serve more than one camera package.
