Production crews have long accepted a frustrating compromise: one PTZ camera for the climate-controlled studio, another ruggedised unit for the car park, the rooftop, or the stadium concourse. Bolin Technology decided that split no longer makes sense. The Bolin Range is a single PTZR platform that moves between a news set and a rain-soaked outside broadcast with nothing more than a change of mounting bracket. It carries a 1/1.8-inch Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, a brushless direct-drive motor assembly capable of four-axis movement at up to 300 degrees per second, and a connectivity panel that covers 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0, NDI HX3, USB-C, and gigabit Ethernet — all behind weather-sealed covers. A balanced XLR audio input, onboard MicroSD recording, and built-in timecode synchronisation round out a specification list that, until now, required at least two separate camera bodies to cover.

Bolin Technology chose the NAB Show in Las Vegas — still the largest annual gathering for broadcast and media technology — to pull the curtain on the Range in April 2026. It shared booth space with two other new releases, the R9-L420N studio PTZ and the KBD Plus controller, but the Range drew the sharpest attention. The reason is straightforward: no other manufacturer had shipped a single PTZ body rated for both studio-grade image quality and genuine all-weather outdoor duty in the same housing.

A removable carrying handle with threaded accessory mounting points sits on top. Clip on a wireless video transmitter, an external monitor, or a compact microphone — the handle takes 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch threads. For fixed installations the handle comes off entirely, and the body mounts to ceiling brackets, wall arms, or standard tripod plates using the same thread pattern on the base.

IP65 Protection

The IP65 designation confirms complete protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. In practical terms, the Bolin Range handles sustained rainfall, high-pressure cleaning hoses at a moderate distance, and wind-driven sand or grit without any supplementary housing or cover. Every I/O connection on the rear panel sits behind a hinged weather cover, so cables can be dressed once and left exposed to the elements without degradation at the connector interface.

Beyond the IP rating, Bolin applies a C3-class salt-air corrosion treatment to the entire exterior. The STARVIS 2 architecture stacks the photodiode layer above the circuit layer, which shortens the light path to each pixel and raises quantum efficiency — the practical result is cleaner low-light performance and broader dynamic range than back-illuminated sensors of the same generation. Minimum illumination sits at 0.5 lux with the lens wide open at f/1.6 and automatic gain active, which is enough to hold a usable picture under emergency lighting or late-evening ambient conditions.

The optical block delivers 25x zoom with a further 16x digital extension. The horizontal field of view runs from 59.2° at the wide end down to 2.5° at full telephoto — wide enough to frame a conference stage and tight enough to isolate a speaker's face from the back of a 30-metre hall. Minimum focus distance is 15 centimetres at the wide setting and one metre at telephoto, which allows tight product shots or document close-ups when the camera is rigged on a desk mount.

A Time-of-Flight autofocus module works alongside the contrast-detect system to lock subjects quickly, even in low-contrast scenes or against busy backgrounds. AI-assisted face detection steers both focus and exposure priority toward on-screen talent, and Bolin has signalled that future firmware will add AI framing and AI tracking to the feature set without a hardware change.

Internal Recording

The Bolin Range carries a built-in MicroSD card slot for onboard recording — a feature that separates it from the vast majority of PTZ cameras on the market, which depend entirely on external recorders or network-based capture. In a live production environment this serves as an invaluable safety net: if the SDI or IP feed drops due to a cable fault, a network switch failure, or a power interruption at the production end, the camera keeps rolling locally.

For single-operator shoots — corporate interviews, educational recordings, house-of-worship services — onboard recording eliminates the need for a separate recorder entirely. Mount the Range, frame the shot, press record, and retrieve the file afterwards. The camera handles the encode internally, which means one fewer box to power, one fewer cable to dress, and one fewer point of failure in the signal chain.

The rear connector panel of the Bolin Range reads like a checklist of every signal transport a professional production might demand. 12G-SDI carries uncompressed 4K 60p over a single BNC run — essential for broadcast trucks, OB vans, and permanent studio installations where SDI infrastructure is already in place and latency must stay below one frame. HDMI 2.0 feeds confidence monitors, projectors, or capture cards that sit close to the camera position.

NDI HX3 with an embedded bridge enables the camera to appear as a source on any NDI-compatible network without an external converter box. Production teams running software switchers, cloud-based production pipelines, or distributed campus systems can discover and route the Range's feed over standard gigabit Ethernet alongside control data, tally, and audio — all on a single cable. For remote and internet-based contribution, the camera supports SRT, RTMP, and RTSP streaming protocols natively, allowing a direct push to cloud ingest points or CDN origins.

Built-in Wi-Fi adds wireless camera control and low-latency preview from a tablet or smartphone, which is particularly convenient during rigging when running a temporary control cable would be impractical. And with PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt Type 4, Class 8) the camera draws power, video, audio, and control over a single Ethernet cable — the definitive single-cable installation for both permanent mounts and rapid temporary deployments.

Every output operates simultaneously with independently configurable resolution and frame rate, so a single Bolin Range body can feed an SDI switcher, an NDI network, a USB conferencing platform, and an SRT cloud encoder at the same time without any external distribution amplifier.

4K 60p 10-Bit

The Bolin Range captures and outputs 3840 × 2160 at 50 or 60 progressive frames per second — true UHD at full temporal resolution. The 60p frame rate is not a marketing asterisk that only applies to 1080p; the full 4K raster runs at the top speed across the 12G-SDI output, which demands the full 12 Gbit/s data rate. For sports, live music, and any content with rapid motion, 60 progressive frames eliminate the judder and motion artefacts that mar 30p or interlaced acquisition.

The 10-bit colour depth delivered over the 12G-SDI path encodes 1,024 discrete levels per colour channel instead of the 256 levels that 8-bit pipelines allow.
