PTZ cameras for outdoor broadcasting.

Take your live production outdoors. Compare BirdDog and Bolin PTZ cameras for changing weather, distant subjects and reliable transmission.
A camera above a stadium or concert stage must keep delivering when the weather changes. Choosing outdoor PTZ cameras means assessing the complete installation: temperature, lens protection, usable zoom and the connection back to the production gallery. These decisions affect both the pictures and the cost of reaching a camera for maintenance.
Operating temperature range: –40°C to 60°C.
The BirdDog O4 Grey and the three Bolin models featured here operate from –40°C to +60°C. Integrated heating supports permanent outdoor positions, from winter sports venues to exposed rooftops. The O4 combines this weather tolerance with 4K at up to 60 fps, useful for following movement during live sport.
Power needs equal attention. For the Bolin cameras, allow for heater demand and use the specified external supply in freezing conditions; the manufacturer advises against relying on PoE in the cold. A temperature rating alone does not establish that every power arrangement will support it.

IP67 protection and wipers.
The Bolin EXU420N Grey, EXU230NX and EXU248N combine IP67 protection with a concealed wiper, heater and defroster. The wiper clears rain from the front window when a rooftop presenter or pitch-side interview has to remain on air. Correct installation of the weatherproof rear cover and cable seals is part of that protection.
The BirdDog O4 takes a different approach: its enclosure is IP66, and hydrophobic front glass sheds water without a mechanical wiper. Neither solution removes the need to inspect the window and seals between productions.

Large sensors and fast optics.
The Bolin EXU248N Grey has the largest sensor in this selection, paired with optical image stabilisation and an ND filter. That combination matters for detailed establishing shots and exposure control in bright daylight. Its output reaches 4K30 or Full HD60; the advertised zoom range reaches 18× in 4K and 48× in Full HD, and should not be read as 48× optical zoom.
For evening events delivered in Full HD, the EXU230NX pairs a STARVIS 2 sensor with an f/1.6 maximum aperture at the wide end. At telephoto, this becomes f/4.8. Check lighting at the actual framing distance: a bright wide shot does not guarantee the same exposure on a tight shot from the back of a venue.

High-quality codecs and transmission.
The Bolin EXU230NX Grey sends up to 1080p60 over NDI HX3 or 3G-SDI. For 4K60 production, the EXU420N and BirdDog O4 provide 12G-SDI alongside IP video. The O4 can send NDI High Bandwidth and NDI HX3 simultaneously, serving receivers with different network requirements.
NDI HX3 uses H.264 or H.265 to reduce bandwidth demand compared with NDI High Bandwidth. For an internet contribution link, SRT supports recovery of lost packets, provided there is enough bandwidth and buffering time. Test the complete camera-to-decoder path before transmission: network delay and codec delay both count.
