A 40 mm prime sits between the classic 35 mm and 50 mm fields of view, giving crews a natural perspective without pushing faces too wide or compressing space too strongly. The DZOFilm Vespid Prime 40mm T2.1 PL Mount (VV/FF) uses this angle for interviews, narrative coverage, commercial close work and controlled documentary scenes, where one lens may need to hold a subject, part of the set and enough background context in one frame. Its 46.5 mm image circle covers Full Frame and VistaVision formats, so large-format cameras keep the look that the focal length was chosen to deliver.

The optical specification is clearly cine-oriented: 40 mm focal length, T2.1 to T22 aperture range and 10 elements in 9 groups. At T2.1 the lens gives useful separation for night interiors, low-key product shots or dialogue scenes with visible environment; stopped down, it remains practical for studio lighting, green-screen plates and multi-camera sets that need more depth of field. A 16-blade iris helps out-of-focus highlights stay rounded, giving the lens a softer transition from sharp detail to defocus instead of a harsh video look.

Manual control is a strong reason to choose this Vespid 40 mm for professional camera builds. The 270° focus rotation gives a focus puller more usable travel than a still-photo lens, especially during slow moves from a foreground prop to talent or from one actor to another. The 68° iris rotation allows measured exposure changes, and 0.8 MOD cine gears on focus and iris integrate with follow-focus units, wireless lens motors and studio lens-control systems. Close focus reaches 0.3 m from the sensor plane, useful for table details, hands, labels and compact product shots without immediately changing to a macro lens.

The PL mount places the lens in a cinema environment, from shoulder rigs to remote heads and gimbal builds where repeatable mechanics matter. M77 front filtration supports screw-in diffusion, polarising or ND filters for lean camera packages, while the Vespid series keeps a coherent optical character across wider and longer focal lengths. For a rental house, production company or in-house content team, this lens adds a measured 40 mm option that bridges general coverage and tighter framing with credible large-format cine rendering.
