FieldCast 2Core MM Heavy Duty 100m on Drum Fiber Cable

Nothing on this drum asks for a splice tray. Both ends of the FieldCast 2Core MM Heavy Duty 100m leave the factory already terminated and measured, so bringing a fibre link up between a camera position and the gallery comes down to unwinding, mating two connectors and patching. No cleaver, no fusion splicer, no fibre technician standing by while the rest of the crew waits. On a production that hires riggers in for the week, that decides who is able to put the run in.

Under the tactical sheath lie two cores of protected 50/125 OM3 multimode fibre, enough for a signal out and a return on one line, or two independent feeds travelling the same way if the optics at either end are set up for it. Two blue rings mark the drum as 2Core multimode and keep it clear of the yellow-ringed single mode stock on the next rack. A male FieldCast 2Core MM connector is fitted at each end — the same part on both, and no other connector type on the cable, so there is no right way round and nothing to label before it is loaded out.

Heavy Duty is the outdoor grade of this cable: a tactical jacket that takes gravel, standing water and the wheel of a scissor lift, where the Ultra Light version of the same glass belongs indoors on cable tray and carpet. A screw cap shuts the optical face while a line lies unpatched on a loading bay floor, and once mated, cap, plug and receptacle are sealed to IP67 under EN 60529. The hundred metres ship wound on a Schill GT310 drum, the smaller of the two Heavy Duty drums, which stows in a van where the 200 m version will not.

That length covers most of what a single building throws at a crew: a tee box at a golf event running back to the compound behind the clubhouse, an election-night studio whose results desk sits in a suite along the corridor, a ring apron feeding a production room beneath the stand. Past that, the 2Core MM coupler cable carries a run on to 200 m through a connector pair rather than a splice. Gear with LC ports is met by the separate 2Core MM adapter cable, not off the drum itself: an SFP cage, a Blackmagic Studio Camera side adapter, a fibre-fed switch. The D-size chassis connector holds that transition behind a 19-inch panel.
