Laowa Proteus 85 mm T2 2× Anamorphic S35 (Amber Flare) is the telephoto anchor of Venus Optics’ anamorphic line. Covering a 25.9 mm image circle it fills Super 35+ sensors like ALEXA 35 Open Gate or RED V-RAPTOR 7 K 6:5, yielding 2.66:1 from 4:3 or 2.4:1 from 6:5. The constant 2× squeeze across the 270° focus throw eliminates “mumps’’ and keeps oval bokeh.

An optical block of 18 elements in 13 groups maintains high MTF at T2–T22, while 10 iris blades shape a smooth background. Coatings generate a controlled amber horizontal flare without veiling glare, and focus breathing is minimal. Sharpness and chromatic control stay consistent across the 33.9° horizontal FOV.

The cinema housing provides interchangeable ARRI PL or Canon EF mounts, 0.8 MOD gears in unified positions, and a Ø114 mm front that accepts Ø105 mm filters or clip-on 4 × 5.65″ matte boxes. Dual scale engravings aid crews, and close-focus reaches 0.82 m for intimate portraits. A rigid aluminium barrel, internal focus and a modest 2.95 kg / 240 mm (9.4″) build balance on gimbals.

The bright T2 aperture keeps ISO low on night sets and produces depth roll-off. Elliptical highlights stay thin, enhancing compression. Built-in back-focus adjustment saves time, and gear rings align with other Proteus primes for fast swaps. The formula resolves 8 K and HDR capture, controls lateral CA, and the multilayer coating protects contrast under strong stage lights while internal focus keeps the barrel length static. Delivered in a padded hard case for daily protection on set.
