The Netgear M4250-10G2XF-PoE++ (GSM4212UX-100EUS) belongs to the AV Line M4250 series, a family of fully managed switches built from the ground up for AV-over-IP environments. Eight 1G PoE++ ports support the 802.3bt Ultra90 standard at up to 90W per port, delivering a combined PoE budget of 720W. That is enough to power PTZ cameras, video encoders, decoders, touchscreen panels, and IP lighting controllers directly from a single network cable — no separate power supplies cluttering the rack.
The GSM4212UX-100EUS operates on a 60 Gbps non-blocking switching fabric with line-rate forwarding at 44.64 Mpps. Latency stays below 1.84 µs on Gigabit ports and under 0.81 µs on the two 10G SFP+ fibre uplinks. A 16K MAC address table, 4K concurrent VLANs, and jumbo frames up to 12 KB give headroom for dense multicast topologies found in broadcast control rooms, live event production, and multi-zone corporate AV installations. The SFP+ slots accept fibre or DAC modules for trunk connections to M4300 or M4500 aggregation switches.
What distinguishes this unit for audio and video professionals is a dedicated AV web interface with colour-coded, port-based profiles. Out of the box, engineers can assign Dante, AES67, Q-SYS, or AVB profiles for audio, and NVX, NDI, SDVoE, Kramer KDS, or Atlona profiles for video — without touching the CLI. NETGEAR IGMP Plus automates multicast delivery across interconnected M4250 units in a Layer 2 network, while Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG configure inter-switch links the moment cables are connected. PTPv2 Transparent Clock (IEEE 1588) ensures precise time synchronisation for lip-sync-critical live performances.
Rear-facing ports keep cabling tidy behind the rack — practical in OB vans, television studios, houses of worship, and conference rooms. Selectable fan modes, including a fully fanless option, keep the switch quiet enough for on-air environments where open microphones sit nearby. Layer 3 capabilities such as static routing, RIP, PIM-SM/DM multicast routing, and a built-in DHCP server mean this 1U rackmount device can anchor anything from a compact streaming setup to a broadcast facility.
